  examines several DUI cases where Mayan indigenous language speakers inter
 acted with the police in Spanish\, and where I was engaged by the defense 
 as an expert in forensic linguistics. I will walk participants through my 
 report-writing process\, testimony\, and outcomes.\n\nI will take particip
 ants through one case’s journey from arraignment\, expert report\, exper
 t testimony at motion to suppress\, argument and findings by the judge\, a
 ppeal of the motion to suppress\, decision on appeal\, Racial Justice Act 
 (RJA) motion\, written argument\, oral argument on RJA motion\, and judge
 ’s finding at the prima facie phase. I will explain the Racial Justice A
 ct (California Penal Code 745) and its potential to shed light on implicit
  bias with regard to LEP individuals\, language discrimination\, and issue
 s of equal access to justice for LEP court users.\n\n\nPresenter\nKaty Van
  Sant is a federally and State of California certified Spanish court inter
 preter. She has been a full-time staff interpreter for the Alameda County 
 Superior Court since 2002\, working mainly in criminal court. Van Sant has
  done forensic transcription and translation work since 1998. She received
  a master’s degree in forensic linguistics in 2024 and began working as 
 an expert witness in that area. She has testified as an expert in jury tri
